Slow days

Well, I hope everyone had a wonderful Easter weekend.  The weather was nicer then expected.  I am looking forward to being able to catch up with all that I have to do now that the holiday is in the past.  Some times a slow day like today is just what I need.  Then tomorrow it will be back to busy as usual.

A new envy

Well, the pull- drop method was interesting to try.  I can honestly say that I missed my electric kistka very much on this process.  It uses the old, slow method of the candle to work with in the heating technique, which is so slow compared to just having the tool already warm for you.  At this time I think I will be sticking with the way I am used to for times sake.  Although, I did happen to make a wonderful design, which is rough, with the technique.  I was happy with how it turned out and will post a picture of it later.  By the time it was finished, I was happy, and so was my back, to be done.  I have a envy for the people who make eggs using only this process, I had thought I was patient, until now.    Over time I think I would get quicker with the process, but for now, oh electric kistka, how I love you…….

New for me, old for some.

I have decided to try a new way of decorating eggs for me, but it has been around for a long while.  The drop-pull method of making a Pysanky egg.  I have never tried it before, but have been wanting to for some time and today is as good as any to start with.  I am putting aside the spring cleaning to do some work, well both are actually work, I just enjoy one much more, the eggs of course!  I will let everyone know how it goes for me. Time to start warming up some wax!

Tisket a tasket, I have a brand new basket

Ukrainian Egg Design By April: Basket Weave

Basket weave

This Goose egg was designed by my younger days of when I used to do henna tattoos on myself.  Some of the wonderful traditional designs used to make beautiful tattoos can be done on an egg.  I was trying to think of what to do that would be new and this came into play.  I was happy with how it turned out.  It has two tones of blue, and either color or both can be displayed to your liking.

Ukrainian Egg Size: Chicken And Goose Egg

goose and chicken eggs

On the left is a Goose egg,

On the right is a jumbo chicken egg.  I used quarters to compare the size for reference.  I love designing eggs in many sizes, but goose eggs seem to be my favorite.  They are larger, the shells are thicker, usually because goose are more often free range, and these come from a local farm by my house.  Even though they can be pricier then a chicken egg, you get more bang for your buck.  The thicker shells are harder to break in case of a accidental drop, and they are easier to spot in a display.  The size is just amazing when held in your hand.  Most reactions to a goose egg is, “geesh that’s one big egg”.

Donate for a good cause.

Ukrainian Egg Design By April: Traditional EggThis egg was recently auctioned off at a benefit for someone who had cancer.  I was happy to donate these to the cause.  The event was a big success for help for them to pay their health and other necessary bills.  Many items were auctioned at the event, mine were just a few. I have donated to other events to help where I can, this was one to name out of a few.

The size of an egg.

What is the difference between the size of  a goose egg and a chicken egg you may ask?  Well goose eggs are much larger, quiet a bit larger.  The goose egg is more durable also.  Because the goose egg  is much larger they also require a bit more time to design one.  This will affect the cost, but to actually see a goose egg that is finished, and hold this huge egg is incredible.  Some people have never had a chance to hold a goose egg.  I love the size of them.  They have very large yolks, which would take up the size of a chicken egg.  I am glad that I will be able to offer them again finally.  I will reflect my pricing of the difference between the two sizes, just make sure you are careful to look and see which one you want.  Goose eggs will fill a display up nicely due to their size.Chicken And Goose Egg

Eggs by the dozen

I was very excited today to receive my first batch of goose eggs from a local home.  If you are not aware, goose eggs are hard to come by at a reasonable price in this field.  I used to own two wonderful African geese, which had been hand raised since they hatched.  They were very friendly and would let me pet them and were wonderful watch dogs honking at anyone that came to my house.  They also knew when it was alright when I told them it was ok.   One unfortunately was eaten by coyotes, something that tends to happen in the country.  Sad, but part of life, and I was not mad at the coyotes for doing so, but sad because I missed my goose.  The other went to a local farm when I moved to house without a pond or barn for them to stay in.  One day soon I expect to have more of my own geese, but until then I am grateful to the family that is willing to sell me the eggs they have!

The Lily and the Hawk Moth

Ukrainian Egg Design By April: LilliesI am sorry I have not posted in a while, I have had a wonderful cold, as you all know how those go. This egg has a white background with various colored lilies on it, one of my favorite flowers, actually I guess I really like all flowers.  Some flowers just rank higher then others.  They are so beautiful and attract so many wonderful things, bees, humming birds, hawks  moths, and the like.  If you have not had the pleasure in seeing a Hawk moth in person, they are a treat.  They’re a mix of a hummingbird and a bee, wings like the bird and fuzzy like the bee, very interesting insects, I love them.

Are these feathers?

Ukrainian Egg Design By April: FeathersThis was done on a whim.  It was made to look oriental, but it ended up looking like feathers, to me any way.  It just goes to show that sometimes what you plan ends up being something neat even though it did not turn out as intended.
